Databases

MLA International Bibliography - This is the largest and most comprehensive database for literary criticism in all languages. The MLA also covers, to a lesser degree, subjects such as folklore, linguistics, and film studies. In addition to journal articles, the MLA indexes book articles, books, and dissertations. It does not, however, index the book reviews included in literary journals.

Literature Online - Lion is a database of academic journals covering literary and cultural studies. The full contents of each issue are included and are fully searchable by keyword, phrase, author, and subject. Users have access to the full text of more than 350,000 works of poetry, drama and prose in English from the 8th century to the present. In addition users can search for information on over 16,000 authors, of over 100 different nationalities.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index - Web of Science - Essentially an online version of the three traditional Citation Indexes: Science, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. In addition to searching by keyword, subject, author, etc. for articles in over 8,000 journals, one can do a "cited reference" search, in other words, it's possible to see how frequently and where an article has been cited. Web of Science is one of the most powerful indexes available, but also relatively difficult to use. There is extensive help, however. Also an excellent source for finding book reviews; to do so, limit the search to document type book review (found near the bottom of the screen).
