Help Using K-State Libraries and Their Resources

For assistance with the online catalog, periodical indexes, electronic databases, the World Wide Web, or other library resources, ask at the Hale Library Help Desk, 2nd Floor, (785) 532-7421, e-mail . You may be referred to Subject Librarians for in-depth subject-specific research needs.

Adaptive Technology/ Special Equipment

The Adaptive Technology Lab (AT Lab), located in 213 Hale, is open during the Media Development Center hours. For information on the equipment available in the AT Lab and other locations in Hale Library, go to http://www.lib.ksu.edu/services/disabilities/equipment.html.

Alternate Format/Large Print Library Handouts

Library handouts are available in electronic format and large print upon request. If you require any library information in an alternative format, contact the Hale Library Help Desk, 785-532-7421 or e-mail .

Book Return - 24-Hour Book Drop

For your convenience, a 24-hour drive-up book drop has been placed on the north side of Dickens Hall (east of Hale Library).

Book Trucks for in Library Use

Available to all library patrons, burgundy book carts are placed in various locations throughout Hale Library to assist with moving books from one location to another.

 

Call Number Texting Service

To use this service look for the phone icon and the phrase "Text me this call number" after you find an item in the K-State Libraries online catalog. Click the link, fill in your cell phone number and click "Send." The service sends a text message which included the item's location, call number and title. If you have questions or need assistance use the Ask the Librarian webpage.


Document Delivery Services - Interlibrary Services (ILS)

Interlibrary Services, located in 122 Hale Library, offers two types of document delivery service.

  • Inter-Library Loan - For access to articles and books not owned by the K-State Libraries, place requests using the ILS ILLiad online request system.


  • Scan and Deliver Document Delivery Service - The ILS Staff will retrieve, scan, and deliver via email locally owned library material. This service currently is available only to K-State faculty, staff, distance patrons, and students registered with Disability Support Services.

If assistance is needed in completing ILS request forms, please ask at the ILS service counter, phone (785) 532-7440 or send e-mail . ILLiad, an automated request system is available via the World Wide Web. To use ILLiad begin at URL: http://www.lib.ksu.edu/illiad.


Email and Instant Message (IM) Reference Services

Extended Book Loan Periods

Subject to other demands on the material, invididuals with disabilities may request extended loan periods for books, reserve items and bound periodicals. Laptop Computers

  • Laptop Computers for Checkout - Laptops are available for checkout to faculty, staff, and currently registered students, in 4-hour increments. Inquire at the iTAC Help Desk, 214 Hale Library, or call (785) 532-7722 for further information.


  • Using Laptop Computers in Hale Library - Access the Internet and the K-State Libraries databases from your own laptop. For details go to: http://www.lib.ksu.edu/help/laptops.html

Laser Printers

K-Staters with eIDs are allotted $10.00 each semester, plus $5.00 in the summer, for free laser printing in University Computing Labs including the Hale Library InfoCommons.

A color printer is available in the Media Development Center, 213 Hale Library for 75¢ per page. The color printer accepts Wildcat Cards which deduct print fees from your allotted print allowance when you login with your eID.

Library Tours and Instruction

Anyone interested in general information about Hale Library and its resources may attend regularly scheduled classes offered by Library Instruction. See the calendar and class descriptions for further information. Please contact in advance to request special accommodations when required.

Photocopiers in Hale Library

  • Self-service photocopiers are located on 1st, 2nd & 3rd floors in Hale Library. Staff on duty can assist with copying/imaging problems during library service hours. The cash/coin-op photocopiers make black and white copies at $.10/page.

Large print copies are available at the same cost as regular size copies for individuals with vision impairments. For assistance, inquire at the Hale Library Circulation Desk, (785) 532-7425 or email .   Request Large Print Copies

Proxy Borrowing Service

Students registered with Disability Support Services may request proxy service which enables someone else to check out library material for them. Borrowers, not proxies, are responsible for the material checked, including fines and replacement costs. Inquire at the Hale Library Circulation Desk, or phone Circulation Unit Head, Janice Barrons, (785) 532-7460.

Reader Services

Reader services may be available for anyone unable to access library print material. Contact Disability Support Services, 202 Holton Hall, or (785) 532-6441. If no reader is available, library staff will read printed materials with advance notice. Contact the Hale Library Help Desk at (785) 532-7421, e-mail .

Retrieval of Library Material

Phone Hale Library Circulation, (785) 532-7425, or email to request retrieval in Hale Library or from one of the branch libraries. Library materials are retrieved once a day, Monday - Friday, from branch libraries and storge facilities. (Please submit your request one or two days in advance.)

A K-State computing account is required for e-mail requests. To establish an e-mail account contact the K-State IT Help Desk, 214 Hale Library, or phone: (785) 532-7722.

Self Service Scanning

Bookeye self service scanners are located on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd floors in Hale Library. Scan to .jpg, .png, and PDF (recommended) and email or save to a flash drive.

Anyone using a screen reader to access text, may want to consider using scanners and read-a-loud software in the Media Development Center - map. Reading software is also available in the AT Lab - map.

Subject Librarians

Anyone needing information about library resources pertaining to a specific subject area may make an appointment with the subject librarian for that discipline.
