Collections Services: Acquisitions
Review Room Rules

Observe the open hours, 8:00a.m.- 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday.

Do not remove materials from the Review Room, temporarily or permanently.

Be careful to return materials to exactly the same shelf from which they were taken.

Do not remove dust jackets or flyers, slips and other inserts from the materials.

If you wish to offer an opinion about any item, insert a clearly signed note.

You may insert a “CIRCULATION Hold for Reviewer” flyer in an item; be certain to clearly and completely fill in the needed information. You may insert a book jacket flyer in an item if you want the book jacket after the cataloger is through with it.

Staff directly involved in the review process may perform their duties at times beyond those given above.

Access to the Review Room is provided to serve the following purposes:

  • to allow subject librarians to see what others are acquiring, in order to put their collections in context, and to understand the overlap of interests among departments and programs


  • to provide the opportunity to assign or reassign the location of a given item within the library system


  • to provide the opportunity to evaluate materials received on approval, in order to return unwanted items, and gather feedback on approval profiles


  • to provide for the evaluation of gift materials for possible addition to the collections


  • to allow the opportunity to assign departmental and binding codes to new serials


  • to provide the opportunity for subject librarians to pick up catalogs and advertising for future use


Other specialized purposes include providing the opportunity
:

  • to evaluate withdrawals
  • to evaluate materials in need of preservation treatment
  • to approve transfers from one library location to another
